Dolomites in August?

Hi!

We are trying to plan a trip to Italy in August. I have read that August is also when most locals holiday. We visited the Dolomites last June and fell in love with it. My question is, will it be overrun with people in August?

Also what is the best way to tack on a trip to Rome if we do the Dolomites? Best and most efficient way to travel between the two locations?

Thank you!

Absolutely not from the German web site. In Italy only from the train operators:

https://www.trenitalia.com/tcom-en

https://www.italotreno.it/en [private competitor with lower fares on some routes]

On skyscanner.com, see if you can fly into Venice and out of Rome [assuming that's the mode of transportation].

Read this about driving in Italy and restrictions involved [ZTLs]; never leave anything of value in a vehicle when parked:

Thanks for the replies. Will it be noticeably more crowded then say June?

Yes, the most crowded time in the year is August 1 to 15. If you have to reserve accomodation do not wait, and better places are likely already gone. The second half of the month it is a bit less crowded.

The hardest thing will be getting lodging in August, and you will pay a premium for it. Also, restaurant reservations will be imperative. But once out on the trails, the crowds will disperse and not be a huge factor.
