Dolomites from Venice in late November

We are a family of 6 adults. We are interesting in sightseeing and some easy walk in the mountains.
Is a good idea as one day trip from Venice? We prefer to return to sleep in Venice because this will be at the end of a 3 week trip. We don't want to carry our luggage all the way. In the last 6 days, Venice will be our base before returning home.

I was thinking to take early morning trains to Belluno.
Should we rent a car instead of using the train?

Any recommendations will be appreciated.
Thanks

The easiest place to get to in the Dolomites from Venice is Cortina. About 2 hours by car; 2.5 by train. With an early start you can do this in a day. Cortina is beautiful but if you go a little further up to Ortisei (3 hours by car; too long by train for a day trip) the mountains are spectacular. Belluno is nice but it isn't really in the mountains...you will get a nice view of one side of them though.
You may want to consider taking a couple of days from Venice and sleeping in the Dolomites - you won't be sorry as they are some of the most dramatic peaks in Europe. Venice has 2-3 days of sights but after that it's a bit of a stretch to find things to do.
I personally prefer having a car in the Dolomites...I like to drive and the roads are a lot of fun there. Depending on where you want to go, a far can be an asset since the trains only deliver people to the larger towns and the public bus service, although fairly good, will slow you down a bit.

Late November in the Dolomites?! I can't guarantee there will be snow, but certainly at higher altitudes there's a distinct possibility. So as far as an 'easy walk in the mountains', at best it will be muddy. No way would I drive, and for six adults you'd need a van anyway.

You might be better off on that day to take a daytrip via train to Verona if you've had enough of Venice.

November is very much off-season in the mountains: not yet ski season and well-past hiking season. Most lifts are closed so access to trails is limited. It could be nice to go to Cortina for a day if the weather is clear. Personally, I'd stay in Venice and enjoy that fine city which is great off-season.
