Dolomites base

Heading back to the Dolomites this summer. Last year we were in Castelrotto. Because we will have some non-hikers with us this year I think that Castelrotto, being so small, makes for a poor choice. My thinking is to base ourselves in Cortina so the less outdoorsy types have more to do. Is that thought process valid? I want to be in the midst of the mountains and near the trails so Bolzano is not on my list. IF you do go to Bolzano, though, go to the museum to see the "ice man". It is an EXCELLENT museum.

Hi Jeff,

I'd recommend Ortisei in the Val Gardena. Small town with a nice pedestrian zone with shops, cafes, restaurants, etc. The Mont Seuc cable car takes you right from Ortisei to the Seiser Alm/Alpe di Siusi. You don't need to be a hiker to enjoy the Seiser Alm. At the top is a cafe/restaurant with outdoor tables with terrific Dolomite scenery. There's also paved "roads" to walk among the amazing scenery. Maybe some "non-hikers" will turn out to be avid "walkers".

To answer your question, your thought process about Cortina is valid. We just found it too busy and crowded for our liking.
