Dolomites Advice

Hello! We are going to the dolomites for about 3 days in September (9/8-9/10) and I'm working on narrowing down exactly what we'll be doing. I've been doing so much research & feel like I have so much information in my head, but would really like to hear other's opinions from an outside point of view. We'll be staying on the west side, and top of my list to see/hike are Seceda & Seiser Alm.

We are considering taking the cable car up to Seceda and then hiking back down- not sure if that is a good way to save money and see more, or if we should just take the cable car both ways to conserve time?

I also am looking for one more hike to do and strongly considering Cinque Torri. Unless anyone has better suggestions? We're looking to avoid the super tourist congested places (besides Seceda obviously).

Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated!

The weather should be pretty decent during that time, although Alpine weather is fickle and there's no 100% guarantee for sunny days. Seceda and Seiser Alm should not be missed. You can hike to Ortisei from Seceda, but please wear hiking boots and bring trekking poles if needed. Cinque Torri is also nice. So is Tre Cime, whose loop trail requires 4-6 hours to complete.

If you are unlucky and have a rainy day, then a visit to Bolzano to see the Ice Man exhibit is a must. It's well worth your time and effort.

Finally, book your hotel ASAP. I suggest you stay in Ortisei.

Regarding hiking down from Seceda, my preference would be to use that time taking another lift/hike combination. From the bottom lift station of Seceda, you can easily (well, it IS uphill) reach the funicular to Rasciesa Ridge. On the other side of the valley, you can take a gondola to Mont Seuc.

That is a LOT of downhill! Hard on knees and hips so be certain you are up to that. A better experience, IMO, would be one of the routes across the mastle to Col Raiser, then take the lift down there and return to base. Much more scenic than downhill to Ortisei.

When there was snow up high in Sept last year we did some low elevation hikes one of which took us through some interesting areas and by a nice refugio popping us out at the lower lift Station. Don't know that if id recommend fing the whole downhill. If you wanted to split the difference there is an intermediate lift station you could use
