Hi. We have one night in the Dolomites and need to stay someplace that is worth while with great views, yet not too far from the train so we don't burn up too much travel time. Any suggestions?
add another night if possible it is beautiful. We stayed in Bolzano, but next time in Castelrotto.
We also stayed in Bolzano(Bosen). We were there to see the "Ice Man" in the special museum devoted to him and his artifacts. It was very interesting.
Bolzano is a pretty town. There is a cable car just down the block from the train station. The view was very nice.
Our hotel was just across from the train station and was a part of the Best Western chain.
Enjoy...

Earlier this month we stayed overnight in Brixen/Bressanone. There are several nice hotels downtown (check on the tripadvisor.com website) but we headed farther up the hill to Hotel Temlhof - great views of the valley, quiet, and elegant in a way.
The Pope is vacationing in Brixen every year (he just left so visit him in Rome); he must know something about the place.
Really beautiful places in South Tirol are mostly off the rail lines, but mark the Grödner Tal (Val Gardena) for the future. Kastelruth/Castelrotto also is a pick, but you need a car or bus.
As mentioned above there is a cable car by the rail station in Bozen (Bolzano)which goes upto Oberbozen am Ritten (Soprabolzano). The Hotel Post Victoria, near the cable car station in Oberbozen, has terrific views. If you don't like cable cars, you can get there by bus, but it takes a while longer.
If you really want to see the Dolomites, you will need to take the train to Bolzano and then bus to Castelrotto or Ortisei in the Val Gardena, and it would be worth it. Bolzano is a larger city.
