Dolomites

We have 3 nites between a visit to Florence and Salzburg.
Want to stop in the Dolomites for casual hikes & scenery.
We will be taking the train. Any thoughts on a home base
for 3 nites near lifts up the alps? Thanks for any assistance.

What time of year specifically?

By train, the Val Gardena. Any of the 3 towns (Ortisei, St. Christina and Selava) is a good choice, as they are just a few minutes bus ride from one to the next. Ortisei is the largest, St. Christina the smallest, but in the middle.

Here's a link to summer 2016 lift dates and times. Use it as a general guide until the new 2017 summer schedule is posted. There are 3 or 4 lifts open mid May every year and early June. Even with just a few open and running, with three nights, you'll have plenty to keep you busy. The Dolomites are so worth seeing in person. Like nothing else you'll see in the alps. Amazing.

Bolzano's nice but is down in the valley; it's not a mountain town. Very pretty, though, and home to the museum housing the Iceman.
