dolomites

We are scheduled to be in The Dolomites (Ortisei) June 1-5 this year. We want to be able to go up the cable cars and walk around - not any challenging hikes, but just a stroll to see the beautiful area. We will also have a car and hope to drive to some places a little further away.

I am looking for suggestions - we are in our 70s, spend summers in Colorado and while we do hike, we aren't really wanting to hike but just leisurely explore the area.

Thank you for your helpl

Also, looking for restaurant recommendations. We are not on a budget.

Since you will be Ortisei, do not miss exploring Alpe di Siusi. https://throneandvine.com/alpe-di-siusi-hiking-guide/. The hiking here is easy overall and you will be surrounded by incredible vistas of the Dolomites. A restaurant we love in Ortisei is Tubladel. Also near the area is Val di Funes, which is one of the most peaceful valleys in the region. https://throneandvine.com/val-di-funes/. If you do not mind a bit of a drive, you could also visit Lago di Braies and Prato Piazza. Both destinations offer easy walks and views you will never forget!

Hi,

We didn’t stay in Ortesei but in Castelrotto. We took the cable car up to the Alpe di Suisi which I believe you can also access from Ortesei. There are a number of hikes of varying degrees of difficulty there. We did one of the hikes from the Alpe di Suisi and there was only one slightly challenging part that was a little downhill with some scree so it was a bit slippery. Hiking poles would have been good in that situation. You can just stroll the main road of the Alpe di Suisi if you like. It’s easy. You can visit the Val di Funes by car. There is also a route through the mountains from Bolzano that loops around to Ortesei which is spectacular. The route is listed in the Rick Steves guidebook. It’s a beautiful area.
