Dolomites - 3rd week in June

If you had 3 nights in the Dolomites with a car, where would you stay? If we added a 4th night, would you spend all 4 nights in spot or pick 2 different areas?

Thank you for your feedback!

I would stay in Ortisei at Hotel Grones. We were there the same time as you’ll be and the weather was beautiful. Beautiful scenery!

Two in Ortisei and two in Castelrotto to see the whole area but to enjoy both. Probably be just the beginning of high season.

Ortisei and Castelrotto are next door to each other, I wouldn’t bother moving from one to the other if you decide to stay around there.

Many years ago I spent a few nights in Vipiteno, a bit further north (not technically in the Dolomites?). It has nicer little centre than the two villages mentioned above, and is probably cheaper. The driving and hiking is gorgeous. Close by are the fabulous Reifenstein Castle (limited entry) and Novacella Abbey, if they interest you. Going south we visited Bressanone, Chiusa, swung over to Ortisei and Castelrotto and a bit further east. All about the scenery.

Southeast from Vipiteno we visited Merano. Again, a very nice, windy drive. I remember liking Merano, which has a very pretty walk above it, the Tappeinerweg Trail.

10 years ago we spent 2 nights in Cortina and 2 in Canazei.
Last year we went back and stayed 3nights in Cortina again.
Love the region around Cortina. The Tre Cime di lavaredo walk is breathtaking, the lago di Braies(lake) is also wonderful, walks at Cinquetorri as well, lago di sorapiss also.

Last year we spent 2 nights in Cortina with a car. This year we are going to spend six nights: 3 in Cortina and 3 in Val de Gardena. Are you going to be hiking? If you are, I would suggest you write down your hikes to be able to see if you need to slit your time. Distances in the Alps seem short, but they are not!

Hi,

I’d stay 4 nights in the Alta Badia. Perfect central location to all of the Dolomites. Even a day trip to Bolzano to see the Ice Man exhibit if so interested. Cortina, Brixen and Sterzing are easy day trips. We stayed three times in La Villa, Alta Badia.
