We are going to be in the Dolomites Oct 17 for 4 nights and I am struggling on a home base. I realize some places are closed which adds to the challenge of finding a place to stay. We will have a car. I need input on a few areas.
There are a lot of reviews for Castelrotto, but what about Merno? This looks like a nice area.
I know the weather can be cold, but I am hoping the weather will hold out for a few day hikes and exploring.

Do you mean 'Merano'? If you search with the correct spelling, you'll find a few posts.
If you want to see the mountains up close , base in Ortisei . We will be in Ortisei October 20-23 staying in an Air B&B. We will have a car but are struggling with what kind of car to rent--the smallest car available (the typical suggestion for Italy) or a 4-wheel drive since the weather may be unpredictable in the mountains. Any suggestions? We plan to take several short trips into the Dolomites themselves.
