Dolomite route/reservations

In early August we plan to rent a car for 3 days upon departure from Venice and go north through the Dolomites on our way to Lake Como. Any suggestions as to route, sights and if we need advance lodging reservations at that time of year?

We are headed west from Austria to visit friends in Switzerland just ahead of you. There is tons of info about the Dolomites, just not here on this forum. You picked a couple of the top sights in Northern Italy, but Americans are not aware of them, or so it seems.

There are seemingly thousands of lodgings in South Tirol. While the area is very popular with Europeans, you will do fine without reservations if you jot down some likely hotels, pensions, or even guest farms in towns along the route. My family in Austria tells me they never reserve ahead, even in summer. It may be advisable if you are staying in lodgings recommended by RS, Tripadvisor.com, or Frommer's. Check out suedtirol.it and similar sites. I just received a fat brochure from www.roterhahn.it with farm listings.

Route - north from Trento toward Bozen/Bolzano. Major attractions: Rose Garden, Tre Cime, Seiseralm, Bozen, Meran. Best valley - Grödnertal (Ortisei). I can supply more.

Lake Garda - booked solid!
