Dolomite foothills-Udine- Tracing Ancestry-Great Place to stay?

2nd week in May, we'll drive from Lago di Garda to Meduno & Maniago, villages north of Spilimbergo, Udine, to visit father's grandparents' ancestral area. Any suggestions for a special place to stay (and eat) within 45 min. of this area, for an overnight?

For smaller towns like this, you may be able to get some ideas by using Michelin's ViaMichelin website. You can put in town names and get both hotels and restaurants. I don't generally think Michelin's opinion about Italian restaurants is necessarily authoritative, but it's a good resource to start from. From there, you can check out the hotel's and restaurant's websites. Another resource I use is Gambero Rosso, but their website is in Italian (well, actually, the wine portion of the site is in English, but the restaurant portion is in Italian).

Bobbie we stayed at the La Boatina winery in Cormons (via Corona 62). The rooms were nice, but the best part was the special muti-course lunch that you could sign up for. Each course was awesome, and each was served with a different wine. It took over two hours, but boy, was it fun. There also was a Fred Plotkin reccomended restaurant nearby, where we had a fantastic (although not cheap!) dinner one night. (can't remember the name)

Wow~thanks to all of you for your helpful comments. According to my cousin in Bend, who has gone to Meduno several times, it's a center for hang gliding, so I'll look forward to seeing some action there. I ended up looking all over areas within an hour of Meduno and selecting a prosecco-producing villa called Alice Relais Nella Vigna, in Carpesica, Vittorio/Veneto. It sounds intriguing; I love country vistas overlooking vineyards.... I'll still want to find a good place to eat lunch or an early supper, between Meduno/Maniago and Vittorio/Veneto.

The town of San Daniele del Friuli is nearby -- famous for its prosciutto. It is definitely worth a visit there to tour a prosciuttificio. Buon viaggio!
