Dolomite day trip from Venice?

I'm wondering if it's feasable to do a day trip to the Dolomites from Venice? We have a group of 8 -- do trains and busses go north? I just bought the Rick Steves book yesterday, and haven't had time to do much searching yet. Thought I would ask others who may have experience with this area. Thanks!

It is possible with a car but I would not advise it. The Dolomites with its awesome scenery deserves more than a day. To do it in a day you would need to leave early and it would be best to rent a car. I do not know the bus schedules. Although I would not attempt it in a day you can leave Venice and drive the Great Dolomite Road mentioned in Rick's book. Ideally you would go for a couple of nights eventually going to Bolzano and while there stop in the museum and see Otzi the Ice Man. An interesting museum. We did this trip with the intention of just driving on through to Bolzano in one day on the Great Dolomite Road but realized in a hurry that was not going to happen. Thankfully we were flexible with our itinerary and spent almost 3 days and 2 nights. Another day would have even been better. I do enjoy photography so we were constantly stopping for photos and admiring the beauty of the Dolomites. If you are set on the Dolomites maybe you could make some changes to your schedule and allow more time for them.
