dolomite

Hi,

We are travelling to Dolomite for 6 days mid-June. We are thinking about going to Pieve di Cadore, Cortina and Tre Crime, maybe Bolzano. The idea is to spend most of the time doing short hikes and enjoying the area. We are flying to Venice. We have a few questions:

  1. Do we need to rent a car or can we get buy with bus and trains?

  2. Any suggestion for a good place to be our base?

  3. Any recommendations for a rifugio?

  4. Any other must see place?

Thanks !

I always recommend that people stay in Ortisei in the Val Gardena, about an hour east of Bolzano. It is easy to visit without a car and offers endless hiking opportunities to rifugi and beautiful vistas. Evey hotel, B/B, and apartment in the area will give you a bus pass to use to go to the lift stations and between the small villages, as well as back to Bolzano when you leave. Take a train to Bolzano and the #170 bus to Ortisei from there. It runs about hourly.

From Ortisei you can get to the Alpe di Siusi as well as the other side of the valley, at Rasciesa and Seceda for hiking. How many nights do you plan in the Dolomites? If 3-to-5, stay in Ortisei, if you have 5-to-7, you might want to also stay a few nights in another area. Moso, near the Tre Cime, requires a car, though.

Thanks! We are travelling for 1 week. My latest thought is to go to Ortisei and spend a few days in the area. Then rent a car and go to Cortina and Tre Crime.

Do you think is doable?

Any must see along the way?

Thanks.

Yes, that would be a good plan. A whole week in the area with no more than two bases because you want to spend your time in the mountains, not a car or bus.

The whole area is a "must see." You will have to Google for information as there is precious little in books. Rick Steves covers Castelrotto and the Alpe di Siusi but there is so much more to the Dolomites. This is the Val Gardena website, and here is the DolomitiSuperSummer site as starting points.

If you spend a few days in Ortisei then decide to rent a car to move on to Cortina, you'll probably have to rent it in Bolzano or Bressanone.

Hi ! I have about 8 days in the Dolomites area in August. Just wonder if someone can give some ideas some towns/mounts I should visit?I'm interested in light walks in the mountains. However, I don't have a car and have to rely on public transport.

My favorite rifugio is the Langkoffelhutte. It's very old with thick stone walls, old-school comforters, and great food! I highly recommend a car for the area - you can do it via public transport but it's so much easier with a car. For must-see things I like the Seiser Alm (views that you can't quite believe are real), the Tre Cime (hike around them), the view from the top of the Marmolata, and the Puez Odle massif. Brixen is a very nice little town.
