Dolmites to Bologna, Where should I visit before returning car? Then train to Cinque Terre

Arriving in Milan Aug. 2, 2024 on a celebratory trip with just my 19 year-old son. Renting a car and traveling to spend three days in Ortisei and two days in Cortina hiking. We will then have two days after leaving Cortina to travel to eventually drop off our car in either Florence or Pisa and train to Cinque Terre for 3 nights and the final stop via train is in Siena for the Palio di Siena. I was thinking of visiting Bologna after leaving Cortina I would still have the rental car and not want to take into Bologna, so looking at recommendations for areas which are easy to stay and take a train into the historic area. I am also open to visiting any other areas between Cortina and Bologna and would love recommendations on any towns to stop. We enjoy walking/hiking, historical areas, good food and scenery. We visited Florence in 2018 so we don't need to see a great deal in that area.

Welcome to the forum!

Are you spending any time at all in Florence?

If not why not just drop the car early and stay in Florence for those 2 nights?

We have already experienced Florence, and while I would gladly go back, he wants to see a new area. I can drop the car at most major cities. Would Parma be worth exploring? I am trying to fill a couple days in the area of Bologna/Parma area before taking the train to cinque Terre.
