I have a trip scheduled more mid may. Venice wondering through Italy ending in Rome. Our Itinerary is pretty much planned but one stop. We were originally making a two night stop in Lake Como but are now considering Bolzano in the Dolmites. We are from Minnesota and have our share of beautiful Lakes. I am a nature girl and feel like I would get more out of the mountains. Is this too early for good hiking and the Alpe di Siusi? I've already heard back from a few hotels that they are not open for our stay dates. May 15,16,17. Any suggestions on whether we are doing the right thing switching cities? We will be going to Cinque Terre after these dates.
There are only 3 of the lifts running at that time of year.

I know Minnesota is the Land of Ten Thousand Lakes, but none of them compares to Como.
Except that at the moment, Como is a shadow of its former self
Even if the lifts are still not open you can drive up to Alpe di Siusi and park at Compatsch. We have hiked mid-May up there and it is still stunning. Suggest packing a lunch as it is unlikely any of the huts will be open yet. Or you can hike Alpe di Siusi and then dine in Seis or Castelrotto afterward. Also suggest hiking the Oachner Hofeweg (farm trail), which is nearby. A wonderful experience for an outdoorsy midwesterner like us! In terms of lakes, you will be able to visit Lago di Carezza and Lago di Braies without relying on any lifts. Braies is spectacular plus you likely will not have to deal with any crowds in mid-May! https://throneandvine.com/exploring-lago-di-braies/
Have been to Como in early May and it was quiet and stunning, with the mountains surrounding capped in snow. Also planned a trip to the Alpe for early June, but got snowed out. Even if you aren't subject to a late season snow storm, that time of year is mud season up there. I'd save the Dolomites for another time when you can go July-Oct. Also, Bolzano is not in the mountains - it's a gateway city and, IMO, not worth altering Como plans for., particularly for how far out of your way it would take you.
