Dolimites - Foliage - best times to go

what is the best time to see the flowers and other foliage in the Dolimites ( Alta Badia area) - it seems late June into July is prime - what about early September - also any thoughts on lodging in that area - we are planning on driving into the area after staying in Venice for several nights Ron

Hi Ron, We love the fall in the Alps, including the Dolomites. We stayed in Val Gardena in Oct. '03, the Vinschgau in Apr. '05 and have since stayed in Alta Badia in Oct.'06 and Sept.'09. We love the Alta Badia and we love staying at the Ciasa Montanara, in La Villa, Alta Badia. Can't imagine staying anywhere else in the area. http://www.montanara.it We have photo's at: http://www.worldisround.com/articles/355539/index.html http://www.worldisround.com/articles/324504/index.html Paul

We were there in the middle of September last year and the drive to the Alta Badia area was beautiful. I di not enjoy our stay at Ciasa Montanara, in La Villa. We had booked months in advance and were lucky that we got a room as we were treated like walk-ins.The area was underconstruction with huge trucks and machinery.I personally would stay closer to a town so you can at least walk.

I don't know where the Alta Badia area is, but last weekend I stayed at the Hotel Santner just up the road from Compatsch and really enjoyed the entire stay. A daytrip to Castelrotto was fun as well. The wildflowers were plentiful and beautiful.
