Dolimites: Easy Val Gardena Walks / Hikes

Planning concept is to stay in Ortisei for at least two days and use the bus to get around to see the sights and take a few easy walks/hikes. Will be a couple of 60+ folks fit enough for about 6-8 miles total per day (assumimg the inclines are not too steep).

I am trying to visualize how to go about it: walk in the valley around Ortisei, walk between the small towns in the valley, take a lift(s) up to alpine meadows, take guided walks.......... .

Concerned a bit about getting lost and finding shelter if we encounter lightening or a sudden rain storm. :)

I think you are on the right forum. Try this website: https://projecteasyhiker.com/. There you will be introduced to the book, Walking in Italy's Val Gardena. The author posts here sometimes. It seems lots of us are interested in easy Val Gardena walks. I have the book, but have not yet put its info into practice. Maybe next year.

Enjoy! Debbie

We just returned from the Val Gardena in late June. We spent five nights and barely scratched the surface. In fact we are already planning to return next summer. We stayed in Selva which is less touristy than Ortisei. Highly recommended taking the funicular up from Ortisei and the gondola up to the Alpe du Siusi. The alpine meadow is stunning. As for thunderstorms most are in the late afternoon and evening. There are plenty of huts to offer you shelter if need be. Enjoy one of the most beautiful places on the planet .

Thanks Richard

Regarding the two different modes to get above the valley floor, do each go to significantly different meadows/viewpoints/hiking trails?

Yes, the funicular goes up the north side of the valley and the gondola goes south. Totally different views. Go to the website valgardena.it. Tons of great information. The Val Gardena is more organized than the Swiss alps.
