Dolamites or Schilthorn?

Both places are heavenly, but I only have time for one. I had my eyes first set on Schilthorn, but then I saw Dolamites. Also, it seems that things are more pocket friendly in Italy...

of the two places, if you have to pick one, which one would you pick, if this is your last chance to travel?

Of the two places, which one is more budget friendly?

We will be traveling in the first 2 weeks of July in the following order (France - Alsace, Switzerland - Lauterbrunnen/ or Milan - Como - Dolomites - Venice - Milan - Portugal - Lisbon - Algarve)

Thank you so much!!!!

It sounds like you have a great trip planned, Hannah. You can't go wrong with either one.

We have stayed in Lauterbrunnen twice on our own and hiked on both the Schilthorn side of the valley and the Eiger-Monk-Jungfrau side. It is breathtakingly beautiful and the hiking is not difficult. You take cable car lifts to where you want to go and then the hiking is over more rolling terrain. Hiking is great on both sides of the valley. We liked the hike that goes through Murren. We also like Wengen on the other side and the hike from Mandleschein to Kleine Sheidegg. We found Lauterbrunnen to be expensive as is Switzerland in general. Food is very high. But you trade that off for some fantastic scenery and world class hiking.

We did the Dolomites two years ago on the Best of Italy in 17 Days Rick Steves' Tour. We were shielded from seeing the cost, as our accommodations and food were included in the tour price, but my sense is that it was less expensive to be in the Dolomites. Hiking was more challenging. You need to be in pretty good shape if you want to do a long hike like we did. The scenery is world class as well.

We would go back to either one.

Good luck and happy and safe travels!

We will be traveling in the first 2 weeks of July in the following order (France - Alsace, Switzerland - Lauterbrunnen/ or Milan - Como - Dolomites - Venice - Milan - Portugal - Lisbon - Algarve)

This -- France - Alsace, Switzerland - Lauterbrunnen -- is doable in 2 weeks.

This: Milan - Como - Dolomites - Venice - Milan - Portugal - Lisbon - Algarve is not doable in 2 weeks, IMO

Either location needs at least 4 nights to make it worth traveling there (meaning the Lauterbrunnen area near the Schilthorn or the Dolomites). Regarding the Dolomites, it is a large area. Selecting a location will help us advise you but again, spend some time.

Both locations are relatively cool in July.

One is only a lookout/restaurant the other is a large region so really tough to compare.
Assume you mean Dolomites or Bernese Oberland?

The two places are completely different (I have spend time at both).
I stayed in BO in the ski season (feb) and Dolomites in the hiking season (sept) so even a little tough for me to compare them.
Looking at your plans for 2 weeks ; I am not sure you have time for either???

We stayed in Wengen in the BO and that was heavenly ; Murren would have been as well. If you were to stay in one of the larger towns in the valley there I don't think it would be as good but of course Wengen and Murren have limited things to do and you are quite isolated.

If you want to stay up in the mountains and hike around without a car, taking lifts to scenic places I think BO is probably best.
If you want to do more / see more than that ; the Dolomites offer far more if you have the time to see it all ; for example an ideal Dolomite time would be for me staying in Ortesi or Cortina both kind of luxury small towns with the mountains near ; take lifts some days and take drives others to see the various sites in the Dolomites. If you are short on time the Dolomites don't offer as much to see in a concentrated area.

Not sure if I am accurately conveying it but they are quite different.
In terms of food Dolomites wins and definitely lower cost
Value: Dolomines wins ; everything in Switzerland is pricey and the lifts in BO are very much so in addition to the lodging costs.
What came as a surprise to me if you pay a similar amount as you would have an average place in Wengen/Murren you can find very luxurious places in the Dolomites with the highest levels of service, amenities and conveniences. Even if that is not your thing it is a nice bonus when it comes at a surprise.

Dolomites are better with a car ; BO is better without a car. Getting around the Dolomites without a car would not be a great thing where a car would be useless to have in the BO.

All that said given your fast paced itinerary if you are only staying say 2 nights ; I would opt for Wengen or Murren in the BO. If I had 4 or more nights ; I would opt for the Dolomites.

I think you need to drop at least one destination so you don't spend such a huge percentage of your time traveling. I vote for the Algarve.

If it was my last chance to travel, AND I hadn't been to Venice, I would pick the Dolomites/Venice option because they are both very high on our list of places we've traveled. But, I'd only go that route if you're staying at each of those locations for 3 days.

If you've already been to Venice, then Wengen, Switzerland (or Murren) are the most breath-taking, but Switzerland is expensive. Transportation, lodging & eating are definitely cheaper in Italy than Switzerland.

The positive is that either location will be a wonderful trip!
