Doge's Palace dungeons

Hello fellow travelers,
We are trying to decide whether to book the Secret Itineraries tour or the newer "Doge's Hidden Treasure" tour.

Many years ago when I visited the Doge's Palace with a regular entrance ticket (not a special guided tour) the prisons on the ground floor were open for public viewing. Is this still true? Can you visit the ground floor prisons with the regular ticket.... or do you have to book the Secret Itineraries tour?

We would appreciate feedback from anyone who has visited the Palace recently. We will be there in October.

Grazie!

Hello Susan,

We did the Secret Itineraries tour last September and it does start in the lowest level of the dungeons and works its way to the attic cells with the bureaucratic offices in between. After the tour you are injected back into the regular flow of the general admission crowds. As I recall you do then wind through some of the cells and across the Bridge of Sighs as part of the regular ticket. It is a much briefer look at the cells and it doesn't include the lowest level or attic cells but you do get to see some of them.

I just checked my Dodge photos and there are cell and Bridge of Sighs photos well after we rejoined the regular tour.

Hope that helps, enjoy Venice,

Yes, the regular ticket allows you access to the dungeons. I was just there last year.

Thanks hiredman and Anita! Your replies were helpful and led me to choose the Hidden Treasure tour since I will be able to visit some of the prison after the guided tour.

In response to the question about hiring a guide, it's not necessary, but it's a personal choice depending on how much detail you want. You could try doing some research prior to your visit to get some background knowledge. I can't remember if there are any information panels inside the Palace. I doubt that the basilica has much in terms of information panels in various languages.
