Does Venice smell?

I was told it did by someone yesterday. I know it used to but haven't heard that in awhile. We are planning to be there in May, if that matters.

We were there in October and the only time we noticed any odor was on a small canal that didn't seem to have much flow to it.

Venice has lots of smells. Salty sea air is the most prominent to me. I also smell pizzas baking outside my favorite little pizzeria. There’s also fish market near Rialto that should awaken your olefactory senses.

What’s your definition of “smell”?

I was there in April ‘18, and the water was very low, and while on the gondola ride, I did smell at times, a rotten smell. The beauty and sheer wonder of being in Venice on a gondola ride, the smell was quickly forgotten! It would seem that the smell would depend on the tide. Have fun! You will love Venice!!

We’ve been there three different years within the last 10 years for several days. I’ve never noticed a bad smell, and I’m very sensitive to smells.

Well of course it smells. Every city smells. The question is: does it smell bad. I've visited 4 times, in different seasons, and IMO, the only bad smells came from the immediate vicinity of the fish market.

With the current flooding, I have to believe it does. No idea about when it isn’t completely flooded.

We've been four times (September and May). The only potential problem is during low water (not high water like now) when mud flats get exposed. The warmer the weather, the more smell there might be. That said, we've only barely noticed it once, and then only down one minor side canal, as someone else mentioned.

We have been there ten or eleven times and never thought it smelled, as in unpleasant odors. Scents, surely, and after acqua alta there might be issues until clean up is complete.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to respond. It doesn’t sound like a major issue which I am glad to hear.
