Does this sound feasible?

We arrive back to Rome from Naples at 2:30pm. We leave for home the next day so I booked a hotel next to FCO. We really want to fit Domus Aurea into our plans. The last tour is at 4:30pm. Could we leave our luggage at the train station and either take a cab or walk to Domus Aurea in time for the last tour of the day? It seems feasible to me but I’m not sure...

Seems quite feasible to me. Depending on time of day and traffic, a cab from Termini train station should take around 20" . Two hours should be plenty of time to check luggage and get to Domus Aurea. You do need to arrive well before your tour time, though. I believe (need to check) that they may release spots about 15" before tour time if you haven't shown by that time.

Yep, check your luggage, take the bus, I think it's the 75, visit the Domus area, dinner in Rome then head to your airport lodging.

I think everyone is assuming you are arriving back in Rome by train (not flying). Correct?

If so, your plan sounds reasonable to me (as long as the train isn't badly delayed, unlikely but always possible). If flying in...maybe another story.

Be sure to take warm clothing to Domus Aurea (coats, gloves, hats . . . ). It's only around 60 and humid.

If using public transit rather that a taxi, you could also take the Metro to the Colosseo stop, from where it's just a short walk to the Domus Aurea entrance.
