Does This 14-Day Sicily Road Trip Itinerary Make Sense? (August Trip)

Hi everyone — I’d love a check on my 14-day Sicily itinerary for this August. My goal is a balanced mix of beaches, food, historic towns, archaeology, and relaxed evenings without constantly changing hotels.

Flight from CTA (departure and arrival)

Current bases:
• Ortigia/Syracuse – 3 nights

• Castellammare del Golfo – 5 nights

• Cefalù – 3 nights

• Taormina area – 3 nights

Planned highlights include:
• Noto + Modica

• Valley of the Temples + Scala dei Turchi transit stop

• Favignana + Zingaro Reserve

• Erice + Segesta

• Palermo stopover

• Etna + Taormina

I’ll have a rental car the whole trip and am trying to avoid overpacking the schedule while still seeing the major highlights.

Main questions:

• Are these bases well balanced geographically?

• Is 5 nights in Castellammare too many?

• Any destinations that feel rushed or unnecessary?

• Any major logistical mistakes with driving/parking/ZTLs?

• Better alternatives for beaches, food stops, or day trips?

Would especially appreciate feedback from anyone who has done a similar Sicily road trip in August. Thanks!

I've stayed in Scopello, a quaint village next to the Zingaro Reserve (almost walking distance to the south entrance), basically minutes from Castellammare, and from there you can easily visit:
Zingaro, Segesta (temple), Selinunte (temples, Trapani, Erice, San Vito lo Capo, Mazzara del Vallo. Favignana is served by hydrofoils from Trapani, so you could park near the port and spend a day, preferably renting a scooter or an e-bike.
Since it's August, I'd select a place on the coast, so Castellammare, Scopello is good. There are a lot of potential day trips, so you need several nights there if you want to visit all. 5 nights is 4 full days, so you only have 4 day trips.
San Vito lo Capo is probably the best beach in Italy, or at least it ranks so according to Italian surveys.

Ortigia is a good base, but if you want to visit also Noto and Modica, a full days goes to that trip.
Also Syracuse has a major Archeological park of the ancient city and it takes most of a day to see.
Ortigia is small and you can see most of it, on the evenings, when you return from your roaming around.

Agrigento area might require a night if you want to see both the temples and the Scala dei Turchi, otherwise where do you put your luggage? I wouldn't leave it in the trunk.

Taormina can be seen in less than a day, and it's crowded. I stayed in Giardini, on the beach. If you want an excursion on Etna you need a day for that.

Cefalu has a Duomo and a beach. You can see everything in less than a day, unless you want plenty of beach time. You might be able to get away with 2 nights.

Palermo has a lot to offer, most people would devote at least 3 nights, but not sure you have it. In August, if you want to visit Palermo for a few nights, you might consider staying in Mondello district, on the beach. You can also take a day trip to Palermo from the Castellammare area (a bit over one hour by car).

I liked Taormina, but not enough for three nights. My recommendation is to skip it and add a night to Ortigia. If Etna is a priority, I think you could go from Ortigia, just a bit longer trip. I didn’t go to Modica, but I enjoyed day trips from Ortigia to Ragusa and Noto, on different days.

I went to the Valley of the Temples twice, once during the day and once at dusk. I would try to time your visit for dusk.

I would add at least three nights to Palermo. There’s a lot to see, including the cathedral, the Royal Palace, and a trip to Monreale.

I went to Cefalu as a day trip from Palermo, and that was fine for me, but if you want to spend time at the beach, then two or three nights are fine. The beach area is gorgeous.

Honest answer? No, it doesn't make sense to me.

-Staying 8 days between Castellammare del Golfo and Cefalu seems like way too much on a 14 day itinerary. I guess if your focus is being on the water/beaches all the time, this accomplishes that.
-Doing Palermo as a "stopover" doesn't make sense unless you absolutely don't want to be in a large city or you've already spent time in Palermo. Palermo is absolutely worth 4 days on a 14-day itinerary.
-A "stopover" to see the Valley of the Temples (probably during the hottest part of the day) and then off to Scala del Turchi before heading off seems a challenge.
-In general, it's just a lot of driving in a very inefficient way.
-Backtracking to Catania seems inefficient unless you're flying direct

Something like this:
Ortigia/Syracuse - 4/5 nights
Valley of the Temples - 1 night
Castellammare del Golfo - 2/3 nights
Cefalù - 2/3 nights
Palermo - 3/4 nights

In Cefalu, hiking up the mountain is tough (like 90 stories, if I remenber correctly) but the views are worth it.

I think the whole 2 weeks at the beach in August would be perfect for me. Some people could spend a whole week at the beach of San Vito Lo Capo and be content. Others could spend a week just visiting the Duomo of Monreale and the Cathedral of Palermo. So it really depends on your interests. To each his own.

Palermo is a beautiful city, but I wouldn't stay in the city in August. In the city center it's hell hot. At most 3 nights, but I'd stay on the beach at Mondello, at least you get some sea breeze and you can hang out with the beach crowd. Then to visit the sights you can take a city bus, so you don't have to deal with traffic or parking. The bus from Mondello to the city center takes less than half hour.

Scopello/Castellammare is a great base for Segesta, Zingaro, Trapani, Erice, Selinunte, San Vito lo Capo, Favignana. To visit all of those above places that you mentioned, 5 nights are probably not enough. Palermo is less than 1.5 hours away, if you care to stay there longer and visit Palermo on a day trip.

Ortigia and Syracuse are pretty. Ortigia is a small island can be seen in a few hours. The Neapolis Archeological Park of Syracuse requires a few hours also. Modica and Noto is a day trip. I think 3 nights is adequate. Since you have a car, you don't need to stay in Ortigia itself, you can stay outside town. If beaches interest you, then you can stay at Fontane Bianche or you can stay at this Agriturismo I stayed once, near Fontane Bianche (about 20-25 min drive from Siracusa). They have a beautiful beach on the property too.

Valley of the Temples+Scala dei Turchi. You need one night here, to do both and not be forced to leave your luggage unattended in the car, which is never a good idea.

Cefalu, in my opinion, can be visited from Palermo (if you stay in Palermo) or maybe one night, two nights at most.

I'm not that fond of Taormina, it's expensive and crowded like Disneyland, however it's a must for most people, and if you've never been you need to see it. You can couple it with the Etna excursion, which would take most part of your day. I think 2 nights is the most I'd spend. In the morning I'd take the Etna excursion, then it the afternoon/evening I'd hang out in Taormina. You can stay down the hill at Giardini Naxos, there are several beach hotels, probably with parking arrangements and it would be cheaper.

You can also add nights to Siracusa area and day trip from there, but it will be at least 1.5 hours drive each way. That wouldn't be my preference, but it's doable.
