Does Mastercard debit card work as well as VISA in Italy?

I have a Mastercard debit card (not a chip card). Has anyone had problems using a MasterCard debit card for ATM withdrawals as opposed to a VISA debit card?

I have not had problems using either one. Just make sure you notify your banks and credit card companies that you will be using those cards overseas and specify which countries you will be using them in.

Have a great trip

The key is access to a network. The two principle networks in Europe are PLUS (VISA) and CIRRUS (Mastercard). Ninety-nine percent of the time an ATM will indicate both Plus and Cirrus. I have seen a couple of time (very rare) when the ATM only indicated one of the networks. If for some reason your card is not accepted, then just move on to the next ATM. We have had a couple of occasions when a card doesn't work. Have no idea why. The first time it happened, I really panicked but now have learned to just find the next one.

My local bank switched from Visa to MasterCard a few months ago. I used by MasterCard debit card at ATMs in Italy in June-July 2014 without any problems.
