Does it seems ok ?

Hi, my wife and I will be in Italy for 12 nights (July 8 to july 20). We would have take more time, but since we leave the kids with the grandparents for that trip we dont want to exagerate ! We know that july will be hot, but being french teacher (and school psychologist for my wife) doesn't leave us much choice.

We want to enjoy at different pace we would have done with the kids. We want to have good late meals, good wine, see museums, get to historic places ...al things we wouldn't have done with kids, or less done.

It will be our sixth trip in Europe, but the first time in Italy

We have figured and plan this :
5 nights in Rome (our flight arrive at 11:20 july 8). We have found an airbnb in Trastevere (http://fr.airbnb.ca/rooms/2265519) .

For Rome we have plan to : get over jetlag on the arrival day, monday see a bit of centro storico and do a food tour of trastevere (Twilight Trastevere with eating italy food tour), see the colesseum and forum on tuesday ( we have to buy advance tickets first monday of june I think). For wednesday and Tuesday, maybe Ostia antican and Vatican.

Fast train on friday to Florence
4 nights in Florence. Once again Airbnb (http://fr.airbnb.ca/rooms/7070194)

We dont have precise plan for Florence, but we probably do a daytrip to Siena

fast train to Venice (stop for 4-5 hours in Padova to see a friend)

3 nights Venice (http://fr.airbnb.ca/rooms/12013950).
No exact plan for Venice. Our flight home leave at 13:20 on july 20

Does that plan sound ok ?

Your plan sounds fine. It's not too rushed and should give you enough time to explore these wonderful cities.

Book sites in advance from official booking sites in order to bypass the really long ticket lines. Buy your train tickets now in order to save money on these fares.

I assume you have booked your apartments and that is final. If you had asked before that I would have recommended you start with Venice, then go to Florence then finish in Rome for the flight home. Or Florence - Venice - Rome. You use that first jet lag day to get to your final point and are in your city of departure at the end with out a rushed trip back. When you have to rush back to home base the day before your flight home, you basically waste a day right at the end of your trip. You definitely should be in Rome the night before a flight home. A late train (we had a Thalys come in 5 hours late on a 3.5 hour trip) or strike or whatever can jeopardize a high stakes flight, so don't try it the morning of your high stakes depature. If you are flying out of Venice then 'nevermind.'

Your allocation of time seems about right to me. I would give one more night to Florence and plan a day trip to Siena but then I love Florence more than Rome. 3 nights is fine for Venice when you have little time. The plan is reasonably well balanced except for the order of cities and I am sure it will be a minor issue. Note that it will be very hot this time of year which may affect how much you can get done in any given day, so don't overplan your itinerary.

Thanks for those answers ! Donna, thM'at excatly what we have plan to do (buy tickets in advance). Trains tickets are bought !

I dont really get why we should have done Venice before and Rome for last. We have an open jaw ticket, we arrive in Rome and leave from Venice. We figute that Rome would be more hectic than venice for getting over jetlag but since we have 5 nights In rome it would allows us extra time. Ans we hvbe been jetlaged In Berlin, Paris, and Barcelona before, so I guess it will be ok !

And , for us, Venice is bit the icing on the cake, and we like to keep the cake for last !

I don't see any reason to leave from Rome as opposed to Venice. You can get direct flights out of Venice as well as out of Rome. I think your plan is fine. Do wait too long to book your sites tickets, they are usually limited in quantity.

As I said, 'if leaving from Venice'. 'nevermind' --- that is a fine itinerary then the way you have it. Open jaw is always the best when you can swing it.

Usually people doing Italy do it round trip to Rome or Milan -- You avoided that with your plan. Looks good and having the extra day on the front end makes sense given jet lag.
