Does it make sense to rent a car in Rome the day of our cruise from Civatavecchia?

We arrive in Rome on Monday Oct 30th and our cruise departs from Civatavecchia on Thursday November 2nd at 5pm. (have to board by 3pm at the latest).

As far as costs, the rental car will be less than $100 with gas for the day. A cab ride would be about $130 anyway but would be a straight shot. We hadn't really considered public transportation because the 2 people traveling with me are 90 and 72. (I'm 50)

We are staying in Trastevere while in Rome and it doesn't appear that a rental car location is all that far from us.

*We could spend Thursday morning still exploring Rome but with check out times we would have to be out of our hotel anyway and if we store our bags at the hotel we would still have to come back and get them and then depart for Civatavecchia. So to me, it seems like a wasted day in Rome anyway so maybe we just get out of town right away in the morning??

It might allow us to be able to see the countryside between Rome and Civatavecchia for a few hours and have lunch in a small town?

I just don't know what there would be interesting to do/see on the way or in the outskirts of Rome that we might not have otherwise been able to do/see.

Thoughts?

Public transportation will, in my opinion, be more trouble that worth considering the age of your companions. For the extra $30 or $40 I'd forget the rental car and take the cab instead. I'd also leave early in the a.m. to allow for a leisurely trip to the port. Just my thoughts. Do you need a recommendation for a car service?

I would not rent a car and drive in Rome. Parking is difficult and traffic is bad. Take a taxi for piece of mind.

I would enjoy the 2 days you have in Rome and use romecabs.com to get to the port on Thursday morning after a leisurely breakfast and last walk around the delightful alleys of Trastavere.

I don't remember it costing that much for a limo from Rome to the Port. I used Bob's Limo and it was more like 60 Euro. Shop around a little more.

We paid more than 60 Euros, several years ago. It is over an hour by car, and the vehicle will have to return empty. 125 Euros is entirely reasonable. I can't imagine renting a car to do this. The countryside is not worth it, you can't take a chance on missing the embarcation, you have to fill the tank, and wait in line to return the car at a CRUISE PORT! I can't say for sure that there's nothing to see between the port and Rome, but, come on! It's one of the largest, sprawling cities of Europe. How many Home Depots do you want to see while traveling? Your time is better spent finding a MORE expensive limo company that can drive your 90-year old onto the pier and stop right beside the ship. I hope that doesn't require going with the cruise company's jacked up price. (My mother is 91-years old, so I know what I'm talking about.)

Then you have to wait in line at the shuttle bus shelter that the cruise port operates for all boat companies, until a bus is full enough to head for the pier and your boat. (Alas, most limo companies can't drive onto the pier. But at least they'll drop you at the bus circle, and you'll have no car rental return duties.) You are right that you don't want to take a 90 year old on the train, and then get ripped off by a taxi at the Civitavecchia rail station! It's way too far for a 90 year old without luggage to walk.

Vick, are you old enough to remember the Firesign Theater line, "Yeah, I'm high on a full-tank and a clean windshield!" But you're not in California anymore ... ....

Good luck driving, and especially parking in Trastevere.
Take a private transfer.
About €150 for up to 4 passengers is the going rate for a private transfer from CIV to Roma.
