Thanks to a traveller I have refined my question. We'd like to check our bags for several hours at the Florence Train station before boarding in the afternoon. Is that possible? Thanks!

Khatiba - Yes, Firenze S.M.N., the central train station in Florence does has Left Luggage Facilities. I believe their phone number (and info on many more Left Luggage options in Italy) can be found on this link, Left Luggage Facilities.
