I used Citymapper in other European cities to plan the transportation inside cities and it works very well. I don't know if it is also the best choice in Italian cities. If not, any suggestions? For example, in Milan, I heard ATM Milano can be used. I don't know if ATM Milano is better than Citymapper in Milan. Any suggestions?

jyung, I would go ahead and download Citymapper. It's free, works in almost every major city in Europe and is very easy to use. Once you download the app, pull up the Milan map and just play around with it so you are used to it.

Make sure you also have a paper map for Venice
Getting lost is a given
Much easier to ask for directions if you have a paper map

It works well in Milan as I used it a year ago. It is not available in Verona although googlemaps was. It works well in Venice, Florence and Rome too.

Based on the CityMapper website (https://citymapper.com/cities), these Italian cities are covered: Bologna, Genoa, Florence, Milan, Naples, Rome, Turin and Venice.
