If you had need to see a doctor in Rome, preferably near the Vatican or Trastevere neighborhood (but anywhere really), do you have one you can recommend? I was on a cruise until 2 days ago and have been sick for about six days now. Feels like strep or possibly sinus infection. Mostly a killer sore throat.
Any advice?
Also, do the pharmacies sell antibiotics without a prescription?
If I can’t get any other help, I’ll keep using OTC meds and pray I get better soon. I’m not letting it stop me from touring or sightseeing! Thanks!
You can stop at a Pharmacy and explain what symptoms you have, a few more drugs, might be available. Some countries in Europe do control the use of antibiotics more strictly (for drug resistance reasons) than the US, so despite being able to, they may determine you do not need them, they will determine what you need.
Otherwise, ask your hotel, they may have a multilingual doctor "on call", or at the least could explain your malady to them.
As a further resort, here is a list of English speaking Doctors maintained by the US Embassy: https://it.usembassy.gov/wp-content/uploads/sites/67/ACS-Doctors-Rome-August2023.pdf
Thank you!
We used Doctors in Italy when we lived there. https://www.doctorsinitaly.com/find/
Do you have trip insurance - perhaps you purchased it in conjunction with the cruise?
Many policies offer a concierge service - you may be able to call them and get a referral.
As suggested above, your hotel may be able to help you.
I cracked a tooth in Italy quite a few years ago but contacted the embassy and they gave me the name of a dentist. It was great going to someone reliable, I even believe the issue of payment was resolved because they knew it was an emergency situation or I paid very very little.
Paul it's good to know that that list exists and is even color-coded for location! Thanks for posting. Bonnie, I hope you will be feeling much better soon.
