Do you pay tolls on SS Roads

Hi All,

My wife and I are going to Italy in June and will be doing at least 2 weeks with a car.I'm starting to plan routes and are wondering do you pay tolls on SS roads.I will be driving in Tuscany,Abruzzo,Umbria,Puglia,E-R,and Piedmont.I assume there are no tolls on SP/SR roads.I am planning to avoid the autostrada completely if possible. Thanks in advance.

Cheers
Bruce

I can only speak for Sicily, but the only toll roads were on the autostradas. No tolls on the state roads.

No tolls on the state roads, but you'll consume a lot of time by avoiding the Autostrada. In two weeks, you're going to be hard pressed to see everything on your list, so time will become important.

To some, driving the state roads (and smaller routes) in Tuscany, Abruzzo, Umbria, Puglia, E-R and Piedmont is itself one of the major items on our list.

Thanks everyone for their answers.Yeah the pleasure for me is driving on smaller or country roads. The way I have planned trip is to pick a base for 3-4 days,do day trips then move to new location, which I am hoping to do using SS roads.

I forgot to mention we are in Italy total of 5 weeks,so driving part is only 16 days.Rest of travel is by train.

I understand your objective, however, if you need to speed up the trip a bit, don’t let the tolls deter you. They are not that expensive. Less than 10€ every 100km.

Unless you’re driving from Courmayeur to Torino. You’re on the A5 autostrade for about 125km for €27.50. Those looooong tunnels cost a lot to construct!
