Do we need to reserve seats on the trains?

I'm planning on purchasing point to point tickets at each of the train stations in italy. will any of them require reserving a specific seat? how would i know which ones require a reservation? what is the extra charge for reservation? how early in advance can i purchase a point to point ticket? would it be possible to purchase a ticket say an hr or less prior to departure? where do i go to find the most current train schedules? thanks so much!

Helen, if you are traveling on regional trains they won't need a reservation. If you are traveling on a high speed train, that leaves at a specific time then you will need a seat reservation. Don't worry, you say you are going to buy your tickets when you get to Italy. At the ticket machine it will automatically help you with seat reservations where they are required. There is no extra charge for a seat reservation, it is in the price of the ticket. You can purchase tickets right up till the time of departure. If you buy them 7 days in advance you will qualify for a 15% discount. You can go to the trenitalia website for train schedules. The schedule will be changing on June 12 so there are no trains posted after that date. You can enter an earlier date to see what the schedule will look like. the changes will be minor.
