Do we have to book a Vatican tour ahead of time?

We are going to Rome Sept. 20 and would like to tour the Vatican, Sistine Chapel & St. Peters on Fri. Sept. 21. Do we need to book a tour to avoid the linse ahead of time?
Can we just buy tickets on Sept 20 and show up there early?
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Sue

If this is the only date you can or want to visit the Vatican I personally would book a tour ahead of time. I used angle tours and was very happy with them. Their website is www.angletoursrome.com

Definitely get a reservation to tour the Sistine Chapel. We requested that our hotel fax the Vatican, as I was unable to get through from the home phone. It took more than a week for them to get a reply, but we had the reservation that we wanted and NO waiting in line!!! Well worth the effort. We used the Rick Steves Rome book inside the Vatican museum for a great tour of the features of the museum and the Sistine chapel. In fact, the book was great for all Rome sightseeing. We found Rome very easy to get around in and much of it walkable to major sights. Rick's book was invaluable.
