Rome: Do Not Stay At Hotel Oceania

Everything else Rick Steves' recommended has been wonderful except Hotel Oceania. In his defense, I don't think Rick has been here for at least 15 years based on the autographed memorabilia in the lobby.

Cons:
As I sit in my room I'm overcome by a terrible smell of body odor. The fabric covered walls are stained with dirt and hand oil. The chairs and bed coverlets are also very worn and dirty. The baseboards haven't been dusted in ages. We do not get hot water. When arriving back at the hotel after dinner we ran the bell three times and shouted down the halls before someone returned to the front desk to give us our room key.

Pros:
We do have strong wifi and the woman at check in spoke good English.

Hopefully others have a better experience. Do not stay in room 7.

I would definitely post a review on Trip Advisor if I were you. The reviews on that website are overwhelmingly positive. I wouild appreciate knowing about your experience if I were considering this hotel.

Working on that now. We called the hotel to reserve the room and paid €144 for the night. I'm looking online now and seeing closer to €60 per night. Should have done more research.

I'm surprised to hear about the negative experiences at Hotel Oceania. I believe RS or his staff checks out each hotel listed in the guidebook at least once a year. Perhaps they forgot about Oceania this year? It generally gets excellent ratings on TA, so your experience seems to be the exception.

Have you spoken with the Manager?

Are you sure of the pricing you saw? Just looked at booking.com and rates around €60 per night were for November, nonrefundable; current in-season rates more like €140.

In any case, a room.should NOT smell!
