Our family is traveling to Rome in the middle of July. We have four children ages 9, 11, 14, and 16. On the Roma pass ticket site it says that children that are EU citizens get in free. I saw a posting on another travel website where someone said that they were told at the TI that they had to buy a pass for the kids, but they didn't and their children got in free anyway without regard to nationality. Has anyone had experience with the Roma pass with kids? Or do most of the sites in Rome allow kids to get in free anyway?
No experience with the Roma pass. But our kids are EU citizens and got in free in many places. However, we were asked to show proof of citizenship every time. In places where the free entrance for EU kids did not apply (e.g. Vatican) they paid reduced fees. But I cannot remember any places off hand where kids got in free just so.
I believe kids need a Roma Pass. Additionally, at one site we visited after the first two free sites, I asked for tickets for two adults and two children and was specifically told there was no child discount for non-EU children. Kids clearly need tickets for transportation, so if for some reason it works for you to get them free admission, you will need to buy metro/bus tickets for them.
We traveled to Rome with our non-EU 4 year old and did not have to pay for her at the vatican, colisuem, forum, or on the metro. Not sure about borghese but I'm pretty sure she would have been free.
Just returned from Italy, and my children (13 and 16) both needed their passes at the Colosseum, Forum, and Borghese Gallery. Also used the transport passes on the bus.
