Do I need to bring sweather and/or rain jacket for Italy end of Sept?

Seeing Rome, Cinquettera, and Venice and will live on a boat around Venice for a week. I had planned to pack on black sweatshirt in case it is cold. Are sweathers or a rain jacket necessary also? I was going to pack like it will be hot on our visit. Thanks for advice.

Instead of a bulky sweatshirt...check into some lightweight fleece jacket. it will keep you warmer and have less weight, it will also dry quicker if needed.

always bring a light rain jacket on your trips, you never know what to expect. We had a torrential rain/hail storm in Verona in May this year. We started from Bologna and the weather was great...going 3 hours north, we had a terrible day!

Better to be prepared. Weather in Italy in Sept and Oct is usually pretty mild, but.....!

And but is always right --- two years ago we make the mistake of leaving out light weight sweaters because Rome is always hot, hot, hot. The first week of June was so cold we were wearing our rain jackets and two short sleeve shirts for wamth. It was so cold one night that none of the sidewalk cafes put out the tables. The daytime temps were very comfortable but the evening was uncomfortable. We will never make that mistake again.

I agree with Ellen, be prepared for cold breezes, especially in Venice. I was in Venice in late October and had to wear every sweater and coat I had with me. The cold wind sweeps down the Alps and cools off the Veneto. Combine that with being on open water....brrrr!

Thanks for all your replies. I was trying to pack light like Rick recommends, but don't want to be coat or sweather shopping on the trip.

I layer to be prepared. If I need it I purchase a sweatshirt for about 15-20 dollars which is warm and also a great souvenir.
