I'm going to the major cities April 17-30. Does anyone know if I need reservations for museums and hostels before I leave the states? I want to find out if I can safely "wing it" without having to spend $150 on a hotel because the hostels are full. I'm a female traveling alone and don't care about sharing dorm rooms.
I am not sure about hostels but the big museums usually have long lines. If you wish to save time, it is worth booking the Uffizi and the Accademia in Florence. The Borghese gallery in Rome requires booking.
In Venice and Rome, if you follow Rick's tips, you don't have to book ahead.
its best to check the hostels some are closed in april - your best bet is bed and breakfast.
give a booking in advance i would suggest.

Definitely needed for Uffizi & Accademia in Florence. We were there in March 2006, missed the lines,& saved a few hours waiting.
Get in line early at the Vacican Museum. We got there 20 minutes b4 it opened, just in front of a tour group. We made a bline for the Sistine Chapel, then St Peters, downstairs to the Pope's burial sites, & the to the top of the Dome. When we left the line alone for St Peter's was 200 yds long.
Also visited the Colosseum early with no issues.
