Do I need dinner reservations for Cinque Terre in August?

Hi guys,

I will be in Cinque Terre in August (which I hear is the height of high season), so I'm wondering if I need to make dinner reservations while i'm in Monterosso, or if I can just show up as a party of two. Thoughts?

Your feedback is much appreciated!

Erica,

You should be fine just showing up, although you may have a short wait. A lot will depend on which town you're in and which restaurant you want to dine at. A lot of them don't take reservations. More specific information would be helpful, for example which of the five towns you're referring to.

If you're there at lunch time, I would drop by the restaurant to see if you can make dinner reservations. Also, we have found that if you go when the restaurant first opens, you can often eat then.

erica,

Thanks for the clarification. That makes it easier as I'm quite familiar with Monterosso. The only restaurant I can think of that might require reservations is probably the somewhat upscale Miky restaurant (I'm not sure, I've never dined there) or possibly Hotel Porto Roca. The Cantina di Miky (close to the train station and a big favourite with many here) likely doesn't take reservations (AFAIK), nor do many of the others. As someone else mentioned, you can often avoid crowds by dining early (or at least get seated before the hordes arrive).

If you need more information on restaurants there, send me a PM.

I would make a reservation sometime during the day if you have a chance. The restaurant that I picked for dinner was already reserved for the evening. I had no luck at two other places to eat when I showed up and it was early around 6:30 in the evening. This was in the old town and they had views of the ocean so they were obviously very popular.
