Hello. We are planning a trip to Italy in April 2024 and are wondering if 4 adults plus their 2 carry on luggage pieces (so 8 small bags) fit in a single taxi or will we need 2 taxis to the hotel in the city?

There are different sizes of taxis. You might need a van. If this is from an airport, they will signal for a larger vehicle.

We got our suitcases for 4 in trunk of regular taxis three times on our trip in May but held backpacks on our laps.

Do yourself a favor and travel with no more than a 21" rolling carry on bag.

Yes, 21 inch is what we had. We also could get the four bags on their sides in the rental car we had for 1/2 of our trip. It was tight so any bigger-no.

Eight carry-on size bags is too much for a single taxi. Go for two. With 8 bags the taxi would have surcharge for the luggage.

Many taxicabs are minivans, so they should be able to accommodate all. Depending on which city you are talking about there might be an extra charge (usually €1 per piece) for the luggage, regardless of size and regardless if placed on the trunk or on the lap.
