DIY Siracusa and Ortigia

I've been researching but unable to find a lot of information about Siracusa. Has anyone DIY the above places? Tour operators that I've contacted are booked. We will have one full day there on our cruise.

I do realize that...I was trying to find out if we can do this port on our own and how much walking would actually be involved from the port.
