DIY Amalfi Coast Plan, am i on the right track ?

Hi ,

I am planning a day trip with 3 of my friends to the Amalfi Coast from Naples on 9th October Thursday.
Since i ll be staying close to the port at Naples, i am planning to use the ferry/hydro to&fro to see the Amalfi coast instead of the circumvesuviana trains.

Which place shall i disembark and start with ? Sorrento, positano, amalfi, Salerno ? (Clueless if the boats travel to these places from Naples in October)

Once in the Amalfi coast shall i use the bus service or the ferry to visit different villages ?

Thanks in Advance

Akshay.

From Napoli you can go to Sorrento or Capri. I don't think there are regularly scheduled boats that go from Napoli all the way to the Amalfi Coast. Most boats from/to the Amalfi coast go to Salerno and some to Sorrento. There are several companies. Do a search online using these key words:
NAVIGAZIONE COSTA AMALFITANA

Roberto is right. I don't believe there is a boat directly from Naples to the Amalfi coast. Most likely you will have to change in Sorrento. The Circumvesuviana only runs to Sorrento anyways. You could still take the train as far as Sorrento, then a boat the rest of the way to Positano or Amalfi or where ever else you are going.

We were in Amalfi in Sept, and I had been looking to see if I could take a ferry from Amalfi to Naples to bypass the bus/train combo...no can do...at least not until Sorrento (Edit - oops - no direct ferry from Naples to Amalfi). That being said, you'll have to use the bus between the towns on the Amalfi coast. I'm not sure if a day will be enough to see it all by bus. We had 3 nights near Amalfi (in Atrani) , and didn't see all I'd hoped we would. We used Sorrento Silver Star car services and had a private tour for one day, and even then, with all the driving (and skipping Amalfi since we could just walk there from Atrani), we spent about 60-90 min each in Ravello, Sorrento and Positano, a few stops for scenic views, and it was STILL an 8 hour tour!

Amalfi was OK - but after seeing the church and walking up the main road, that was enough. Ravello was gorgeous (especially the Cimbrone Gardens). We didn't see much of Sorrento but the city center, and by the time we did Positano it was so hot, we didn't walk around to much, but it looked gorgeous and I wish we had spent a little longer. Can't speak for Salerno.

Thank you guys

i might do this after reading your inputs :--

  1. travel to Salerno by train from Naples
  2. Salerno to Ravello and positano by bus
  3. Return to Naples from Sorrento by Ferry.

In this way i start from one end and finish on another end instead of my earlier plan of to and fro from Sorrento which would have been time consuming.

This would be pocket friendly and we get spend more time exploring :)

Sounds like a better plan. Don't underestimate the time it takes for the bus to get to and from Ravello. Beautiful drive, though. The Villa Cimbrone is beautiful but takes some time, too. It will be a long, happy day.

I'll need the others to chime in here but I'm looking at the schedule for marine service from Sorrento to Naples on the alilauro website:

http://www.alilauro.it/orari-e-tariffe?route_group_id=0

I seem to remember that this is one of the very few - if not only - lines which makes runs between these two locations but please correct me if that's wrong? They list 5 boats a day but they look not to be guaranteed (not under obligation), and I remember that turbulent seas can cancel some of the services around the region. That's true of ferries/jetboats between Sorrento - Positano for sure but I'm not sure about Sorrento - Naples. Just wondering if you think it's a good idea for Akshay to have a Plan B - which would be Circumvesuviana - back to Naples?
