Districts of Rome to stay in

I've been told that staying near the Vatican is quiet and more residential. This appeals to me. However, it is a distance from all the other attractions. In light of public transportation does this matter? Your thoughts and favorite accomodation areas?

I have heard nice things about the Prati area near the Vatican. I have only stayed in Trastavere and near Campo de Fiore. We walked most places from there, but with buses and the subway, you should be fine near the Vatican.

We try to stay near Piazza Navonna or the Pantheon since it is a great neighborhood at night. Lots of small backstreets for wandering around and seeing historical sites. We've used booking, com on our last two trips to Rome and ended up staying in new (but old building) places that have worked out great since their prices were lower (since their new). Last year we stayed at Canceldeleria (sp) which we really liked.

I try to stay in the Piazza Navona/Pantheon/Campo dei Fiori area, but anywhere near the Vatican and Trastevere puts you in close connection to trams and buses, and the Metro for the Vatican stops. I know lots of people who just walk everywhere (I would be exhausted).

We have stayed in Prati and enjoyed it very much; I wouldn't have any hesitation booking in that area again as it felt a little less overrun with other tourists. We are avid walkers so the distance from other attractions really didn't feel terribly far but a jump on the metro will get you to some points furthest south with a little less wear on your feet. :O)

We stayed in an apartment in the Borgo Pio area very close to the Vatican and liked it. Very quiet and had a neighborhood feel. And so close to St. Peter's; we walked there every night. Peaceful, and is beautiful all lit up.

I normally stay in the area around Roma Termini, as it's so very convenient for transportation. If touring in Rome the Metro and Buses are easily accessible and if taking day trips the trains are also right there. It may not be the most "scenic" part of Rome but I find it nice and I'm usually only in the hotel to sleep and shower so the area is not a big concern.

Transportation connections and options are excellent from Prati. There is a tram that takes you all the way to Villa Borghese (and beyond), great bus connections to the Centro Storico (#492 in particular, also #40 and #64)), and a Metro station. It is also very walkable. You can walk from St. Peter's to Piazza Navona in about 20 minutes.

We stayed around Rome Termini and really enjoyed it. Since I always use public transportation when traveling to Eurpoe, I like staying next to a Metro or train station to get around quicker.

It looks as if you have lots of options here and I'll just add my two cents. I have stayed near Campo Fiori and in Trastevere and very much enjoyed both locations. Both had good access to local transportation and lots of choices for eating, drinking and people watching. Have fun choosing "just one"!
