Electronic distancing device planned for Florence's duomo

Well this is interesting:

https://www.barrons.com/news/florence-s-duomo-introduces-self-distancing-gadget-01589634611?tesla=y

I wonder how it will work for a couple or a family visiting together? Or if the same device could be adopted for all other Florentine attractions, such as the Uffizi and Accademia, and even street traffic? If it was inexpensive enough, each tourist might be required to purchase one at the first attraction they visit? Would save the duomo or the other tourist sites the cost/staff involved with constantly sanitizing the things.

Big picture, use of such a device might be adopted across all of Italy? Just noodling...

Also, I think I'm reading (other sources) that masks will still be required in all public indoor places indefinitely but need to confirm.

The link worked. Thanks for sharing.

If I were to share my thoughts on this or this approach expanding beyond Florence, my would be removed by the moderators, but I will say that I may limit future travel to Italy to Campania and south, where attitudes toward being told to wear a device around one's neck are more likely to mirror my own. :)

"I wonder how it will work for a couple or a family visiting
together?"

You have just pointed one of the problem of this device. To work correctly every person should wear its own device. If two or more people share the same device they should never stay separated. If one need the bathroom? :-D
In Modena in some public offices will be tested a radar system to check the distance between people, but the problem is the same.

The ideas are not bad, but imposible to be verified.

About masks yes: at the moment must be worn every time you are indoor and even sometimes outdoor if you cannot keep the 1m of distance. No idea when this limit will be removed, but probably not before middle of June.

I also feel that this and similar devices aren't going to be in use very long. The mental image of a bunch of people wandering about a room "beeping" at each other seems a bit humorous. IMO, technology is not the solution to every problem. An equally effective method might be to simply limit the number of people inside at any one time and require use of masks.

Perhaps instead everyone could be provided with a giant hula hoop to use as you walk around the building. Or they could insist everyone wears enormous clown trousers with a 1 metre radius. Or, crazy as it sounds, perhaps tell people to wear a mask and wash/gel their hands more often?

IF they really do try to implement use of the device, hopefully the tech folks have figured out a 'group or family mode' so they can be programmed to ignore a couple or family group being next to one another.

The other issue of just taking them off is easy to solve; charge a deposit or require your passport as security.

There will be many types of efforts to try to insure safety. There were hundreds, if not thousands of experiments in the effort to find the right material for the first practical light bulb filament.

So too there will be experiments on this issue.

I'm thinking the same, Joe. They'll probably have a way to code a couple, a family or a small-group tour together. The devices will only do their thing if someone in the group get close to someone outside of their group.

After having listened to/read from countless travelers complaining about overcrowding for years, I'll give the duomo folks credit for at least experimenting with way to reduce "bug" transmission. Let's face it, our world is going to change, either for the short or longer term. If we don't like some of those changes then I guess we can stay home!

LOL, distance alerts would be a good way to eliminate some picked pockets! 😉

Should be more than one meter in diameter, because you have to calculate 1m of free air between people.
And, yes: somebody thought of it! :-D

Lets see how the first experiments are working. In my opinion the only way to keep Italians separated are controllers with whips.
