Disco Orario

I don't remember using it in Italy, but that's just me and my memory. I had to use a similar one all the time where I lived in Germany.

Check the glove box or under the sun visor of your rental car to see if you already have one. If not, get one from the nearest tabaccheria. You will see a parking sign with the length of time you are allowed to park there. There should be parking spaces painted white. Note the use of the European 24 hr clock. (3pm is 15:00hrs)

You are not required to display the disco orario in a lot. The disco orario is required generally in a street or public piazza where parking is limited to a limited set of time (like 30 min, one hour or more)

It is used in the same situations where in America you have for example a limit of 2 hours paeking, and the parking maid goes around and marks your tire with a yellow chalk, then 2 hours later the parking maid comes again and if he sees that your car hasn’t moved they give you a ticket.

In Italy they don’t have a parking maid with the chalk stick. In the same circumstances where you have a street where you can park let say a max of two hours, you put the disco orario on the dashboard with the time of your arrival when you parked (the disco orario, or time disk, can be rotated). When the pesky policeman comes he will look at the time you displayed as time of arrival, and if more than two hours have passed, they will ticket you.

Below is the road sign that indicates a street where it must be used. In this case the signs says to use the disco orario on the dashboard. The parking max is 90 minutes and is effective on working days (Mon-Sat). Working days are indicated by the two hammers in a cross (from the time working people used to use hammers at work, nowadays they should use the image of a laptop)

The disco orario are sold at tobacconist shops, car parts shops, gas stations, freeway rest stops (area di servizio) at the Autogrill shop, and also some supermarkets. They shouldn’t cost more than a few euro.

Sometimes I didn’t have it so I simply used a make shift one. With a piece of paper and a pen where I wrote ORA DI ARRIVO followed by the time I parked on that spot.. It worked.

The areas where you use it are rare nowadays. Now they have meters so you have to pay and place the receipt on the dashboard with the expiration based on the amount you paid.

The era of free limited time parking with disco orario are mostly gone.
