Directions including public trans Ostia Antica from FCO Hilton Hotel

We are arriving at FCO on the RS tour (taking Eurostar to Venice next day to start tour)> The first day after we land FCO we want to tour Ostia Antica (nearby ?) What's the best walking/public trans. method/directions. I don't want to do taxis or anything expensive.

If you are taking the train to Venice why would you be staying at the airport Hilton? Ask the hotel for public transit info given that OA is just across the Tiber from the airport.

airfare was too expensive to venice for date, but much cheaper to Rome. I'm arriving on Day 1 of the tour in Venice on my 2nd in Italy. I costed it out. Fore me it made sense to take atrain up on the 2nd day. Moreover, I have part of a day to relax.

I find that interesting that you found Venice more expensive especially when you factor in the return ticket, and misc expenses. It has been years since we have used a direct RT ticket. We always price both and generally find the open jaw matches the RT ticket and sometimes is cheaper. Two years ago the ticket into Rome and home from Zurich was $200/person cheaper than a RT to Rome. PS: Not to belabor a point but for other posters since the open jaw ticket often comes up. Just check mid-July dates for a Philly to Venice, Rome to Phil and the fares were $1300-1400. RT Rome same time frame was $1200-1400. Not much difference

I've stayed at that Hilton several times on my "last day" before my flight home, after I dropped the rental car at the airport. The Hilton? Great pool, pathetic buffet. Perhaps I was not smart enough, but I never found an easy way to get to Ostia Antica from the Hilton. So I surrendered to a splurge. I had the Hilton get a cab that put me at OA. When I finished at OA, I cell-called the Hilton, who called a cab to pick me up at OA to return me back to the Hilton. Worked like a charm. There may be a better way; and, if there is, I'd love to hear about it. Cab ride Hilton>OA 15 minutes. I don't recall the total cost of transport, but, whatever it was, I got to see OA, hassle free from the Hilton.

When I costed out the airfare back in Feb I think for May/June. PHL to Venice and rtn home- FCO to PHL was both more expensive and required some inconvenient connections for us. Therefore, it made more sense and the $ difference was not significant between train to Venice (one-way). I bought a 3 day Eur Pass because we are using the ES from Naples to ROM after the tour, and will use the remaining Eur pass an some other day.
