My husband and I are leaving in 2 days for our first trip to Europe together, Tuscany particularly. I am fairly athletic and while I like to dress up I'm expecting us to be touring, hiking, walking and have been thinking about that attire. Then I realized we need to have appropriate dinner attire as well. Italy is know for being dressy and want to be sure we don't look out of place. What is recommend/required for both men and women?
In our experience, for most restaurants, people just wore what they wore out touring for the day, no "dress up," per se. Dinner was often after a long day of touring, without time to go back and change.
If you are into food and have pre-preserved at particular restaurants, then check their websites for pictures of diners to see what they are wearing.
Unless you go to a place like Enoteca Pinchiorri, the most expensive restaurant in Florence, where people may be less informal, everywhere else, people will dress very casually with shorts and all.
Just make sure you don't walk barefoot, that is frown upon in Italy. People will think you are a gypsy if you do.
You said your are athletic, but you shouldn't wear the sweats and holy workout t-shirts pulled out of the hamper after working out either.
As long as you wear something clean and not worn out and falling apart, you'll be fine with nearly anything.
Thank you all! The wrinkled mess made me laugh, not my style, the descriptions provided were what I was hoping for and and I had planned.
