Dining in Venice?

Any recommendations for mid-priced, fun, non-touristy restaurants in Venice? We are traveling there in September.

Update:

I have realized after posting that the search function does not return results based on date so it looked like all the posts were old. I've figured out the filter function!

Thanks Laurel for the link to make it easier. :)

We stayed in the Cannaregio area and this was our favorite meal. Nothing fancy, great outdoor seating, very cozy and friendly staff. Ristorante La Colonna. Cannaregio, 53/29, 30121 Venezia VE, Italy

The seafood spaghetti at Pontinini by the Guglie bridge was one of my favorite dishes of our two weeks in Italy (one of those meals I will be dreaming about for a long time). My wife enjoyed her meal as well. Wine was good. We were too full for dessert but it looked great. The meal was a very reasonable price. I’d make a reservation because the line was long waiting to get in.

In the Rialto Bridge area (on the side of the Grand Canal with the fish market) follow the signs leading to Piazzale Roma. There is an out of the way place named Pane Vino e San Daniele located on Calle Dei Boteri. Definitely a local place, good food, good house wine, and not expensive at all. You should be able to use Google Maps street view feature to "walk" to it before you ever leave home.

We stayed in the Santa Croce area near the San Stae vaporetto stop. We walked to Majer restaurant at the edge of Campo San Giacomo and loved everything about it. The chef is Alessandro, and he will make sure you enjoy your meal. He is a pro! We also loved eating at the many cicchetti bars around the area. Boresso was close to our hotel. Lots of great choices in small plates and good wine!

Our favorite place in Venice was Enoteca Rio Marin at the Calle S. Zuane bridge over the Marin canal. It's more a wine bar but they do have a small menu and the the best we had in Venice.

On trick in Venice, avoid any place where a maitre d' standing out front or a display menu with anything other than Italian on it. The more translations a menu has, the lower quality the food (IMHO).

I have to quibble a bit with this advice:

"On trick in Venice, avoid any place where a maitre d' standing out front or a display menu with anything other than Italian on it. The more translations a menu has, the lower quality the food (IMHO)."

Definitely avoid any place with a person out front trying to get you to come inside. The good places don't need to do that. But I think you would be hard pressed to find ANY restaurant in Venice without a menu with English.

My rule of thumb: The shorter the menu, the better the food.
