Honeymooning in Italy on Globus Best of Italy Tour starting Sept 12-Sept 25. I booked two additional nights in Rome. My husband to be's birthday is the 24th. Looking for some great cozy resatuarants in Rome. Any additional tips would be appreciated!!!!
Hi Kerry,
We loved Trattoria der Pallero near the Pantheon. Grandma and Grandpa just serve you what's fresh that day. Delicious, teeny tiny, old fashioned ma and pa place.
Across from the Cappuchin Crypt are a ton of glass enclosed sidewalk cafes with chandeliers that looked particularly romantic.
Congratulations. You're going to have a ball.
Kerry, try to ignore Steve's nasty comment about your tour. It was incredibly rude and unsolicited.
In answer to your question, I used trip advisor last summer when I wanted to find a nice restaurant in Paris for my husband and my only night out without the kids. I've used Trip advisor a lot and I don't think you can go wrong. They get feedback from large numbers of people so the ratings of the restaurants and hotels are very reliable and the comments helpful. I'm planning to visit Rome next summer, I can't wait! I was last there on my honeymoon in 1996!
Steve, they are going on their honeymoon, for Pete's sake. Would it hurt you to be gracious and not comment on their Globus tour plans?
Steve has never been rude on this site. he may not like tours for a good reason. But, some people prefer a tour, especially if they feel like they need help around the city. No big deal. Keep up the advice Steve
Steve, your comments & opinions about the tour are unhelpful and unnecessary and Kerry (or anyone else taking a tour that might subsequently read this), I hope they don't dampen your excitement for your honeymoon in any way!
Now, food! A few years ago my husband and I ate at a restaurant near the Spanish Steps called Il Gabriello (I think only the Italian version of their website is working). The restaurant is down a long set of steps - it feels like you are eating in a wine cellar, and the brick walls coupled with the candlelight make for a very cozy, romantic setting. As a bonus, the food is really good, too! In fact, when we were there we happened to be seated near Rick Steves himself having dinner. Small world, indeed.
Hope you have a great honeymoon!
MY first trip to Europe back in 1992 was with a girlfriend on a Club ABC tour. We spent two weeks in Spain and Portugal and it was wonderful! There were a lot of senior's on the bus (and a couple of newlyweds too). The seniors especially were a lot of fun! We were in our twenties. I have since traveled with my husband and subsequently with our kids in a more independent manner. There are advantages to both modes of seeing the world.
First, Kerry, congratulations on your upcoming wedding. I hope you don't let negative comments about your plans get to you. You'll have a great time.
I have worked for Globus--I'm no longer a tour director nor have any connection to them--and can tell you their tour directors are highly trained professionals. Since they are the largest English language tour company in the world, they can be very picky as to their tour directors. And any tour director now up to stuff, is let go.
A few problems I have with Rick's Tour Defense Tips article:
1) He has not been on a "big bus" tour in over 30 years. The industry has changed
2)Independent-type tourists tend to threaten guides. Just the opposite. We love them. Why? Because if you know what you want to do, we can help you do it. Unlike those who have no clue and wait for me to make suggestions for free time.
3)Tour guides call the dreaded tourist with a guidebook an "informed passenger." See above. Give me a passenger who knows what they want, and the easier they are to please.
4) Shopping. No tour director would ever push you to buy anything. A local tour guide might, but the over the road tour director won't. (RS does not distinguish between the two since he calls everyone "guides." Easier to lump them together.) Any place a tour director suggests for shopping has been approved by the tour company and will stand behind their products--even after you get home. Can you say that for the cute little shop around the corner?
Now, as for restaurants, besides any suggestions you get here...ask at your hotel. They can probably make some great recommendations. Also check Trip Advisor.
