i have been calling from the states for days trying to make a dinner reservation at Trattoria Sontanza . 011 39 055 212 691. No one answers the phone. Is there another way to reach them? I am told that it is difficult to get a reservation which is why I have been trying from the states.
Am I doing something wrong?
Thanks for your help. Bottom line there are so many wonderful restaurants in Florence, I will just forget it.

Carole, August is a big vacation month for many Italians and so some businesses close for all or part of the month. The reidsitaly.com page for this restaurant seems to confirm that this is the case (see "details"). I would try again next week?

August is the slowest month in Florence during the high season (March-October) since locals go on vacation and Italian tourists don't visit scorching hot art cities in August (they'd rather spend their vacations at the beach or on the mountains). In August Florence is at the mercy of mostly (or only) foreign tourists.
As a result many small businesses take advantage of the slower month and close in August to go on vacation. These are family owned business and obviously they can't stay open 24/7/365.
I presume you are referring to Trattoria Sostanza? I asked our B & B owner to reserve for us about three weeks ahead and that worked great. Great food, classic place. Save room for the homemade desserts.
