Dilemna-Amalfi coast vs Path of the Gods

We arrive in Sorrento Tuesday afternoon, 8 Oct, after an overnight flight from USA to Naples and bus to Sorrento. We will spend 4 nights in Sorrento. We originally intended to chill Tuesday afternoon follwed by 1 day Capri, 1 day Amalfi/Rovello/Positano coast, 1 day Pompeii/Herculaneum. We will leave Sat AM for Rome. Now we discover the Path of the Gods and are intrigued because we're both avid hikers. So the question is if we should sacrifice some of the Amalfi coast for the hike. Are Amalfi and Positano similar enough to consider maybe skipping Amalfi? Is the Path of the Gods worth it? It's ultimately our choice but we'd like to know if others have faced the same question, how they handled, and why? Thanks

It does not take that long to see the towns of Amalfi or Positano. There is nothing really to see though the highlight or Positano is the beach or the view of the town from a boat on the sea. They are both small with lots of tourist traffic. You have enough time to do your hike. The Path of Gods is part of the Amalfi Coast area.

We stayed in Amalfi and found the Duomo, crypt and cloister worth the time.
Spent about 3 hours in Positano, high end shopping and crowds just not our thing
Ravello is lovely, quiet and charming
The walk to Villa Cimbrone and the gardens and views from there were fantastic.
Pretty sure there was a path from Ravello down to Amalfi which you might consider.

I can't say much about other towns on the Amalfi Coast. However, what I did was very similar. We stayed in Sorrento and did one day in Sorrento, 1 day in Capri, 1 day doing Pompeii, and then 1 day doing the Path of Gods and Positano.

I would highly recommend the Path of Gods. I think it took us 3/4 hours to hike and we sat and brought out own lunch. You get amazing views the whole way and walk through some great countryside. Once you make it to the end you can walk the rest of the way to Positano or there is a bus. We walked and it was nice to walk down from the top of the town to the bottom. Positano is beautiful and definitely makes the trip worthwhile with the hike. 10/10 would recommend.

We took the Circumvesuvianna from Sorrento to Castellammare and then from there a bus to Agerola. We had trouble finding where to buy the ticket for the bus. Turns out is was in a little coffee shop/bar next to a book store on the square where the bus stop was. Luckily we had like 45 minutes between the train and the bus so that worked out well.

We just returned from 4 nights on the AC, stayed in Furore, a residential town b/t Positano and Amalfi. Had wanted to hike part of the Path of the Gods but w/2 teens/1 tween opted to do beach fun instead. We spent one day in Ravello then hiked back down to Amalfi town which was beautiful, took about an hour. I think you could do either Positano OR Amalfi and feel like you saw a nice beach town. We took a boat tour of the island which picked us up in Amalfi, saw beautiful scenery of the coast, swam a bit, lunched in Capri and shopped, then headed back to Amalfi. That could be an option for you as the boat will stop in Positano and Capri for you to eat/shop.

We have been to the Amalfi coast twice---1st trip to Ravello on our honeymoon. Third trip we stayed in Positano. Both were spectacular places to stay.

This last trip we did the Path of Gods(I did it with my daughter and her husband)Just beautiful but I love the outdoors and sounds like you also. We did it with a guide but you can do it on your own. We just really enjoyed learning from a guide about the region. On one of our day trips we stopped in Amalfi on the way to Ravello and I was very disappointed compared to our first trip 35 years ago. Tons of people---we should have gone directly to Ravello. If you only have a few days I would skip Amalfi(town) and do a hike instead.

I also would not stay in Sorrento but one of the towns actually on the Amalfi coast. They are magical, especially after the day crowds leave.

Enjoy your trip!

One YouTube channel I looked through, before our trip there was "Nicki Positano" at https://www.youtube.com/user/nikinpos

She's British and has lived in Positano for perhaps 20 years.
Half of her videos are about traveling / visiting the area.
