Difficulty Traveling from Matera to Sorrento

I am trying to plan a trip for myself in April,2020. ( woman traveling solo) Flying into Rome arriving April 6th) from nyc .I purchased a 1 way flight to Bari since I want to visit Sassi Matera. I want to spend 2/3 nights April 6,7,8) there hoping to get to Alberobello. ( don’t know if that is possible to plan from Matera) Then I want to get to Sorrento for Good Friday and spend several days there. Having great difficulty figuring out how to travel from Matera to Sorrento. I would love to head towards Salerno first and visit the ruins in Paestum, but it all sounds so difficult without a rental car. Can you give me any advice .I would like to be in Sorrento for April 9,10, 11 or April 10, 11, 12 and then head back to Rome for the last few days.Any suggestions… Ive been looking at train, bus schedules . How difficult is it to drive to this area from Matera. Help …

I saw your post on TA and I think you got pretty detailed info there. I always start with RometoRio and then research the results to verify them. The point to point journey is not difficult, but when you try to make stops it does become more complicated and time consuming. You may have to omit something.
Driving from Matera to Salerno would not be onerous, but I would certainly drop the car at Salerno and not drive to Sorrento.

Is this correct:
fly into Rome, fly to Bari the same day? You could check the direct airport bus to Matera from there. It might make more sense to stay a night in Bari to visit Alberobello if that is a must. Or had to Alberobello upon arrival and then to Matera the next day. Then I believe bus is better for travel to the east (versus train with changes). You may need to insert an overnight at Salerno to visit Paestum.

Can't help with the Matera>Paestrum piece but it looks like there's a bus from Matera to Naples or Salerno. From Naples, you could take the Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento. From Salerno, you could take a ferries (I would assume they'll be running Easter weekend) or SITA buses to Sorrento.

When exploring your options, enter your travel date in European form (day/month/year). Anyway, just one of (I hope) multiple options you might end up with? :O)

Can you get to Sorrento from Naples?

We have booked the FrecciaLink bus plus train combination from Matera to Naples (via Salerno) for our trip in March. You can see this on Trenitalia. You can only book the bus portion from Matera to Salerno in combination with a Frecce train ticket from Salerno to somewhere else. Naples qualifies for that.

Trying to do Alberobello from Matera may be problematic. One option you might try is blablacar.com.

For Matera to Salerno, recommend you take the flixbus on the 8th late afternoon (only time available early season) this would leave you the 9th to explore Paestum then taking either the ferry ( one change in Amalfi) or the bus on the 10th Good Friday to Sorrento.

You need to check whether ferries run your route in April, before high season. I just don't know.

Be aware that Salerno is not "next to" Sorrento. You can get between them on SITA busses, but it's a long, slow ride, and you have to change busses in Amalfi. Although Naples is "the wrong way", I would value a comfortable public transit to Naples over one to Salerno - unless Paestum is an important part of your visit. I will confess that we abandoned our hope to see Paestum during a five-night stay in Sorrento. It was just too far. And it would be too far if you had a car in Sorrento, which is like a boat anchor around your neck!
