Destination recommendations between Siena and Rome

In June, we'll be spending a week in the area around Volterra and the Hill Towns and then will have 4 nights before we are due in Rome for our flight home. We'll probably have a car so can be flexible. Any suggestions?

Take a look at the website above for places to visit while in Tuscany. In particular look at the Province of Siena.
If you have an extra 4 days on the way from Tuscany to Rome, you could also consider swinging by Umbria (Perugia-Assisi-Gubbio-Spello-Spoleto-Todi-Orvieto and Civita di Bagnoregio.)

I did a day trip of Civita and Bolsena and enjoyed both. If you have a car they are easily accessible.

Roberto has a great idea in recommending Umbria. It has a different feel from Tuscany, still with excellent food and wine. We spent 4 days in Spello a couple of years ago. It is very small but with a train station and decent bus connections. We used it as a base to go to Spoleto, Assisi and Perugia without a car. Also took a great day tour with Gusto Wine Tours .

Thanks so much! Any other ideas? We'll definitely be taking a closer look at Umbria.

I think you'd be more satisfied if you stayed in an agriturismo a little closer to San Gimignano, Certaldo or Siena. Around Volterra is just a little more rural and off the beaten path. I would suggest you visiting Volterra, however.

We stayed between Certaldo and San Gimignano, toured the area hill towns and drove the Autostrada down to the very popular city of Orvieto.

We turned in our rental car at the Orvieto train station, and it took 70 minutes to get to Rome Termini.
